The good news for Philadelphia Phillies fans is that designated hitter Kyle Schwarber is enjoying another hot streak.

That sentence implies there's bad news, and those hoping to see Schwarber in a Phillies uniform next year may want to sit down.

Schwarber has crushed opposing pitching in July, batting .282 with 11 homers, 27 RBIs and a stellar 1.140 OPS through 89 plate appearances. The veteran slugger also won the All-Star Game’s inaugural swing-off earlier this month.

Schwarber’s latest surge is coming at the right time, seeing as the 32-year-old will become a free agent this offseason — and barring an injury, he should have no shortage of suitors come November. He’s quickly erasing any concerns about age sapping his power, with his 36 home runs trailing only Shohei Ohtani’s 38 in the National League.

At his current pace, Schwarber should notch his first 50-home run season. His .381 on-base percentage ranks third among NL hitters (not counting San Francisco Giants star Rafael Devers, who played for the Boston Red Sox through mid-June), and he’s only 21 RBIs from a new career high.

There’s always a need for proven power hitters like Schwarber, who find ways to get on base and make opposing pitchers miserable. Very rarely do players of his caliber hit the open market.

We’ll see if the Phillies intend to step up and extend Schwarber, even if he wants a contract exceeding $100 million. Schwarber signed a four-year, $79 million deal ahead of the 2022 season, and he’s easily justified the contract, averaging 2.5 bWAR with 42 homers and an .855 OPS in that time.

Philadelphia owns a 60-45 record heading into Monday's games and trails the New York Mets by 1 1/2 games in the NL East. The Phillies have a 3 1/2 game lead for the NL’s third and final wild-card spot.
