Marcus Williams' pick-six off of Jameis Winston is the Saints Play of the Day
Jameis Winston didn't need to sign with the Saints to start throwing touchdowns with them. This 2019 Marcus Williams pick-six is the Play of the Day.
We've reached Day 55 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, and that means this 55-yard interception return for a touchdown is our pick for the Saints Play of the Day. Before he was throwing touchdown passes to his Saints teammates, Jameis Winston was picked off while trying to rally the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a fourth-quarter comeback.
Trailing 27-17 at home back in 2019, Winston tried a deep shot to the normally-reliable Mike Evans -- but it wasn't meant to be. Free safety Marcus Williams beat the wideout to the overthrown ball and took it down the sideline, outlining everyone to the end zone. You can see the pick-six for yourself right here.
It wasn't Winston's finest moment on the football field. He'd play his best ball with the Saints after they signed him as a free agent in 2020, getting the first opportunity to replace Drew Brees a season later in 2021. After Winston threw 11 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions in nine games against New Orleans when he was suiting up for Tampa Bay, also taking 24 sacks; as a member of the Saints, he notched 10 starts (in 21 appearances) and connected on 20 touchdowns while throwing 11 interceptions and taking 26 sacks. He also fumbled just five times in black and gold after putting the ball on the turf 50 times in 72 games for Tampa.
As for Williams? Things didn't go as planned between him and the Saints. New Orleans is still trying to replace defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who they let walk away in free agency in 2021 to free up money for an extension with Williams that never manifested even after he spent a year playing on the franchise tag. But he played his best football with the Saints, too. After totaling 15 interceptions with 3 fumbles (2 recoveries) in five years with the Saints, Williams only picked off 5 passes without a single forced fumble (though he did recover a pair of them) in three years with the Baltimore Ravens. Maybe he would've been better off staying in New Orleans.
