Michigan State hockey hosted top prospect Gavin McKenna on a visit this last weekend

Michigan State hockey is in the midst of one of the biggest recruiting battles college hockey has ever seen. The consensus No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, Gavin McKenna, is making the move from the CHL to NCAA hockey and the Spartans are a finalist.

With McKenna down to four schools, it appears that two of the four schools have separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Those two schools include Michigan State and Penn State, who are racing to the finish line.

This past weekend, both the Spartans and the Nittany Lions hosted the top prospect on a visit, fighting to earn the service of the best prospect college hockey might have ever seen. As of now, it appears that those are the only two visits that he will be making.

As it stands, it appears to be as fifty-fifty as a race can be between the two Big Ten rivals. It is reported as if Penn State is offering the most lucrative NIL deal, while the Spartans proven developmental success is thought to be the best in college hockey.
