Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian started with the program in 2021 and has changed the culture in Austin.
He has a record of 38-17 at Texas and enters his fifth year with high expectations. On a recent edition of "Always College Football," Sarkisian sat down with Greg McElroy to discuss the offseason.
Sarkisian revealed that one thing he reminded his coaching staff of was what 5-7 felt like. His tenure with the Longhorns did not get off to a strong start in 2021, as he snapped a four-year streak of bowl appearances for the program.
However, the Longhorns have not missed the postseason since 2021.
"So much early on, I was reminding the staff the other day of what 5-7 felt like in year one," Sarkisian said. "Some of those tough losses and things, and then just the incremental growth, you know? And one, the internal growth in the program with what we're doing and trying to change the culture because I felt like that was one of the key issues that we were having."
Arguably, the best season of Sarkisian's time in Austin happened last year. The Longhorns reached the SEC Championship Game and were the No. 5 seed in the 12-team College Football Playoff.
The Longhorns made it all the way to the semifinal before losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes 28-14. The Buckeyes won the national title over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23.
The atmosphere around the Longhorns has changed over the years, thanks to Sarkisian. The head coach brought out all the stops for a recent recruiting weekend, with multiple Lamborghinis displayed inside Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The venue was even ranked No. 13 in the toughest places to play rankings for the upcoming video game EA Sports College Football 26.
Texas can avenge its loss to Ohio State in its season opener on August 30 in Columbus. Kickoff is at Noon ET on Fox.
