Thursday Tourney Roundup: Marshwood baseball, York softball open play

The top-seeded Marshwood High School baseball team and the York High School softball team both opened their respective tournaments on Thursday.

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Senior right-hander Charlie Hudson wasn't feeling his best when he stepped on the mound for the Marshwood High School baseball team in Thursday's Class A South first-round game against Sanford.

But Hudson was good enough to send the top-seeded Hawks to Saturday's regional semifinal.

Hudson allowed three hits and two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out six as Marshwood beat No. 8 Sanford, 4-2.

"(Hudson) gutted through a stomach illness, and the team played together the entire day," Marshwood head coach Eric Wells said. "Total team win."

Marshwood improved to 16-1 on the season and will face No. 4 Biddeford in Saturday's regional semifinal. Biddeford advanced with a 14-3 win over No. 12 Kennebunk. Biddeford handed Marshwood a 2-0 loss in the third game of the season. The Hawks have won 14 straight games since.

“We look forward to the challenge that Biddeford brings," Wells said. "We are very similar teams, and the games are always tight.”

SOFTBALL

No. 1 York 14

No. 8 Lake Region 11

YORK, Maine - The top-seeded Wildcats scored five runs in the second inning and four in the fifth to hold on for this Class B South quarterfinal win.

York (17-0) will face the winner of Thursday's game between No. 4 Freeport and No. 5 Greely in Saturday's regional semifinal.

Piper Catanese had four hits and two RBIs for the Wildcats, while Maren Robinson had three hits, and three RBIs, and Lindsay Rivers had three hits.

Robinson earned the win in the circle.
