As the Philadelphia Eagles continue their search for a Kevin Patullo replacement at offensive coordinator, the ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter decided to overload fans with curiosity after making a cryptic comment.
Instead of hanging up and concluding his morning spot with 97.5 The Fanatic on Wednesday with a simple “talk soon,” Schefter decided to suggest that his next call-in might come with more than just information about an OC hire.
“Maybe it’ll be even more than that by next week,” Schefter said. “Maybe it’ll be even more than a discussion, than an offensive coordinator, we’ll see. Let’s see what happens here.”
Eagles fans don’t have an actual clue as to what Schefter was hinting at, but the conspiracy theories started flying on Wednesday.
1. Nick Sirianni Fired?
Is this a guess, or speaking something into existence?
I’d have a hard time believing the Eagles are prolonging their offensive coordinator search because they are going to eventually part ways with the head coach. There’s no reason to wait. If Sirianni was getting canned, the Eagles would’ve taken care of that within the first week of the offseason.
It’s quite apparent that Sirianni’s seat is hot heading into 2026. His OC decision and seasonal performance next year could make or break his future in Philadelphia. But there’s no way the Eagles are ready to make that call already.
2. Lane Johnson Calls it a Career?
It’s been a while since Johnson addressed his future. The veteran offensive lineman missed a large chunk of the 2025 season due to a foot injury. He was cleared to return weeks before the playoffs, but couldn’t do much more than practice. Johnson ended up sitting out for the Eagles’ lone playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Is it time for the 35-year-old to hang it up? Some fans are predicting that Johnson will follow the footsteps of Brandon Graham last season. The injuries have piled up, and Johnson struggled to stay healthy. Maybe he’s skeptical about his health moving forward.
3. Vic Fangio Retires?
If there is one guy that Philadelphia does not want to see leave the Eagles, it’s Vic Fangio.
This is by far the most popular theory flying around this week. The 67-year-old defensive coordinator seems pretty comfortable in his position of being a defensive coach up in the booth. It has suited him well over the last two seasons. For some reason, Eagles fans are bracing for the worst.
The timing would be way off. Waiting a few weeks before putting a team in the market for a second coordinator would be an awkward move for Fangio, but Eagles fans seem to believe there might be some legs behind this idea. For what it’s worth, Fangio’s situation was discussed on Thursday.
"I haven't seen anything definitive that he's coming back. I haven't seen anything definitive that he's retiring...Nothing would surprise me either way,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said.
4. AJ Brown Finds a New Home?
Yawn.
We’re tired of this one. The Eagles can’t legally trade Brown next week, but many are under the impression that there could be a major AJ Brown development next week.
Schefter already tossed in some trade speculation about Brown earlier in the offseason. I can guarantee those discussions won’t disappear in the offseason, but I would be shocked if this were a reason to get cryptic.
5. Eagles Stadium News
Last offseason, the conversation about a new stadium started taking place. The Eagles could soon get started on building a new home, giving Philadelphia two new stadiums to talk about.
While a new stadium development would be big news, it’s certainly not something that Eagles fans expect based on Schefter’s hint. I would file this one under honorable mention, as not too many are talking or worried about it.
