Giants-Chiefs final injury report: Andrew Thomas could be a game-time decision

New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas “had another good day” on Thursday, according to head coach Brian Daboll. Whether or not Thomas, who has not played since Week 6 of the 2024 season following surgery for a Lisfranc injury, makes his season debut Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs “is probably going to go all the way up until game time,” Daboll said.

Thomas is officially listed as questionable for Sunday after a third straight day of limited practice participation.

Since the start of the 2023 season, the Giants are 3-17 in games Thomas has missed due to injuries and 6-10 when he has been in the lineup. At 0-2, the Giants could use every available body Sunday against the also 0-2 Chiefs, who have represented the AFC in the Super Bowl in three consecutive seasons, winning twice.

James Hudson started the first two games for the Giants at left tackle. After his meltdown Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, Hudson seems unlikely to play. If Thomas can’t go, rookie Marcus Mbow is the likely option for the Giants at left tackle.

“I listen to the doctors, I listen to the trainers, and I listen to the player,” Daboll said in reference to how decisions about injured players get made. “Ultimately, whether it’s AT or another player, trainers, the doctors, the medical staff, the strength staff, everybody’s involved in those discussions and then come to a general consensus of, this is what’s best for whoever it may be.

“Certainly, don’t want to put somebody out there that isn’t ready to go. I’d say that definitely the player has input as to how they feel, how they’re progressing, and then there’s the medical diagnosis of it and the conversations that take place with whatever injury it may be.”

Thomas said Friday that he is “feeling good” after practicing three consecutive days for the first time.

“We’ll see how I’m feeling tomorrow, and obviously Sunday morning, and go from there,” Thomas said.

Other injuries

Linebacker Darius Muasau has not cleared the concussion protocol and will not play. Linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf) and defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (foot) could each miss a second straight game. Nunez-Roches did not practice Friday, perhaps opening the door for Darius Alexander to play for a second straight week.

Edge defender Chauncey Golston is questionable with an ankle injury, but did not practice at all during the week. Return man Gunner Olszewski did not practice on Friday due to a back injury and is also questionable. That could open the door for Xavier Gipson, claimed on waivers last week, to return kickoffs and punts. It could also mean Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who became the Giants’ primary returner last season when Olszewski went on Injured Reserve, could be elevated from the practice squad.
