On Wednesday evening, the BC men’s basketball team will play host to the Pitt Panthers in Conte Forum for a January ACC clash. BC is coming hot off of their first ACC win of the season, when they defeated Syracuse in overtime at Conte on Saturday. Pitt, meanwhile, is coming off of a home loss against #20 Louisville. Both of these teams are 1-4 in conference thus far this season and have played many of the same opponents (Syracuse, Clemson, Louisville, Georgia Tech).

Pitt’s roster is mostly full of underclassmen trying to prove themselves, but they are led at the top by senior center Cameron Corhen, senior guard Barry Dunning, and senior guard Damarco Minor. They also play alongside sophomore sharpshooter Brandin Cummings, who shoots 34% from three and leads the team in scoring average.

Corhen makes his living in the paint. The 6’10” senior grabs 7.8 rebounds per game and plays tough interior defense, something that BC’s shorter big men can struggle against. Dunning, Minor, and Cummings are the main drivers of the offense, launching 13+ threes per game between them and each often scoring in double figures. Behind them are an inconsistent group of sophomores and freshmen that can often get hunted on defense and mostly resort to shooting contested three-pointers on offense, if things are going poorly.

The Panthers’ biggest strength is their slow pace and scoring efficiency. Pitt plays deliberately on offense and drains most of the clock on their possessions, spreading the ball around and hunting for good shots. It’s somewhat similar to how BC likes to play its own game, by slowing the pace and locking down on halfcourt defense. So far Pitt has been significantly more successful than Boston College on offense, but BC’s defense stands out as possibly the best unit that will be on the floor on Wednesday night. The Eagles play their best when they are limiting ball movement with aggressive defense, forcing opponents into unfavorable one-on-ones, and securing defensive rebounds. Pitt’s offense could be very susceptible to fall into that playstyle and give the Eagles exactly what they want.

On offense, Boston College is inconsistent, so it’s hard to say if they’ll be able to take advantage of a weak Pittsburgh defense. When Pitt’s Cameron Corhen goes to the bench, BC should have enough athleticism to drive to the paint and get buckets or at least get fouled. Assuming Donald Hand doesn’t have another 3/17 night, and BC’s defense continues to be solid, then that should generate enough opportunities to sustain a victory.

Prediction: Boston College 66 Pitt 64
