Saints penalty wipes out an INT, sets up Panthers opening-drive TD

The New Orleans Saints, once again, can’t seem to get out of their own way.

On third-and-nine from their own 31-yard line, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was intercepted by linebacker Demario Davis on Carolina’s opening possession. But instead of flipping momentum early, the play was wiped out due to an unnecessary roughness penalty on safety Justin Reid for a hit on Young. The penalty not only negated Davis’ outstanding play, but gave the Panthers new life -- which they capitalized on with a touchdown run by Rico Dowdle to open the scoring.

Young was targeting tight end Jatavian Sanders on a deep crosser over the middle, but Davis did a phenomenal job sinking underneath the route, locating the football, and making a veteran play. An excellent effort by the ageless linebacker, undone by a completely avoidable mistake.

It’s a story Saints fans have seen time and time again -- this team consistently fails to capitalize on opportunities, especially early in games. Still, with a full game ahead, they'll have another chance to create a takeaway and, hopefully, give their offense a real opportunity to put points on the board.
