The New York Yankees have one of the top power-hitting prospects in the minor leagues in their organization.
That's Spencer Jones, and there are plenty of Bronx faithful who would love to see him play at the MLB level soon.
The reality for Jones, though, is that the Yanks' outfield is quite crowded.
Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge will start. Giancarlo Stanton will DH. Jasson Dominguez will factor in, too.
And so on Sunday, when Yankees GM Brian Cashman spoke on MLB Network Radio, what he had to say wasn't all that shocking.
Cashman revealed that Jones is going to need some time at Triple-A.
It's one of those things that front office folks sometimes say just as a means to avoid starting a player's service time clock.
For Jones, though, there's really no other option. The Yanks will give him everyday time at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre until an opportunity potentially opens up.
In 2025 between Double-A and Triple-A, Jones combined for 35 home runs. He's 6-foot-7 with a prodigious lefty swing, although he does have a lot of swing and miss in his game.
Jones whiffs more than 6-foot-7 Aaron Judge did on his rise through the minors, and even with Judge, that was a concern. So the additional contact issues for Jones are something the Yankees will want to see him improve on.
Because if Jones hits the baseball enough, he'll be a problem for opposing pitchers when he steps into the batter's box, no matter the level.
