'You've still got to run': Jeff Brantley questions Masyn Winn's hustle in Reds-Cardinals
Jeff Brantley on Masyn Winn's jog to first base in the first inning: "If Winn is running even in the slightest with his speed, he beats this out."

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn appeared to gift the Cincinnati Reds an out with his lack of hustle on a groundout during the 1st inning of Friday night's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, and it caught the attention of Fanduel Sports Network analyst Jeff Brantley, among others.
Winn grounded a Brady Singer pitch in the bottom of the 1st to Reds second baseman Matt McLain. McLain misplayed it as Winn jogged to first base, but still recovered in time to throw to Spencer Steer for the out.
"Masyn Winn was not running at all," Brantley said during the broadcast. "That is quite surprising. If Winn is running even in the slightest with his speed, he beats this out. Check it out. 'Ah well.' That's why he's out. … That's one thing that I will say about this Reds' ballclub: Even when they were down offensively, the hustle and the attitude - never, there was never any wavering. They continued to push hard for it. And you've got to respect that. When you're struggling offensively - and I'm sure that Winn was frustrated that he tapped the ball to second base. But you've still got to run, brother."
Winn wasn't benched. He doubled to left in his next at-bat against Singer, and finished the game 2-for-5, with a run and an RBI.

State of the game, I guess. But Masyn Winn doesn’t run out a ground ball and is still thrown out after infielder boots grounder.— Randy Reinhardt (@Pg_Reinhardt) June 20, 2025
While I like Masyn Winn, a lot, his lack of effort just cost @Cardinals a run. It’s not hard to hustle.— Michael Thompson (@Motiger22) June 20, 2025
Masyn Winn’s effort in the 1st inning is unacceptable. Not hustling should not be tolerated at the major league level. @Cardinals— Jay Stemmley (@jstemmley) June 21, 2025
Masyn Winn's response to being in a hitting slump the last couple weeks is to dog it out of the box, which just cost the Cardinals a run. Love ya kid, but that is not ok on any field any time— JohnFulgham AndyRincon (@JFulghamARincon) June 20, 2025
