The start of training camp for all 32 teams around the league is here. And for the New York Jets, Tuesday will be the start of what is hoped to be a new era under first-time head coach Aaron Glenn.
New York is coming off a disastrous five-win season in 2024. They have said goodbye to many aging stars like Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams.
In their place, the Jets are hoping for less noise and more production.
Will the changes be enough to help turn the franchise around? Here, we'll go over the five biggest questions the Jets need to answer during training camp over the next month and a half.
Can Justin Fields become a competent quarterback?
The Jets season hinges on whether or not Fields can grow into the kind of competent quarterback both the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers were hoping to get. While he is in a new offense, with brand new teammates, there's hope Fields can be a bit better than he has been in recent seasons.
Should that growth happen, New York will be much better than anyone expects in 2025.
Who wins center position battle?
Despite ranking as one of the best centers in football last season, Joe Tippmann is in a compeitition with Josh Myers. New York brought Myers in on a very cheap free agent deal, and seems willing to start a competition with Tippmann this camp.
It's a safe bet to assume that the Wisconsin product will win the job, but it is one of the oddest questions for the roster at this time.
Will Jets trade Allen Lazard?
What New York does with Lazard during camp will be fascinating. There are obvious reasons why the organization could trade Lazard to Rodgers' new team in Pittsburgh, but they also need receiver depth of their own.
If Lazard produces during practices, there's a good chance he won't be moved. Anything less, and the former Packer may find a way back to Rodgers after all.
How can fans quantify successful training camp?
New York's defense in 2024 struggled to stay disciplined and make tackles at a pro level. That must change if the group is to carry the club as many expect.
While training camp practices are set up in a way that makes it hard to measure improvements in those areas, the fact that the Jets will bring referees back to practice after spending all of 2024 without them is a sign that the current staff means business about making those improvements.
What will differences be between Aaron Glenn and previous regime?
The differences between Glenn and Robert Saleh has been stark even during offseason workouts. Seeing Glenn on the practice field for training camp will be a different beast, though.
If Glenn can continue with his intentional teaching methods, and have some of this younger talent reach their potential, the Jets are going to surprise some people in 2025.
It's a tall ask for a franchise that has posted just one winning season in 14 years, though.
